Diesel sales has dropped 30 percent… (maybe more) Who stopped buying?

Subsidy should just be for targeted Malaysians only

When we look at the photos of cars with foreign license plates fueling at petrol stations in both in the north and the south of Malaysia, we SHOULD look closer and just make sure they pump just enough to get home. By the way, just pumping 10 litre means they can easily drive 100km. I always wonder why they need to pump so much. Especially if the cars come from that rich, first world country. Really shameful lah if you ask me.

Not so profitable to smuggle lah

As for our neighbour up north, it’s mostly related to smuggling and this is also one big reason why the retail sales has dropped tremendously after our diesel prices went up to current RM3.35 per litre. For those who think that our diesel price is now similar to Thailand, please go get the facts right. If both sides do NOT subsidise… I think we use a different calculation because the price in Thailand is this:

33.44 Baht per litre is equivalent to RM4.29 per litre yeah. However, if one car can take in 50 litres, then the different is just ( RM4.29 minus RM3.35 ) times 50 litres. Thus, any typical car trying to smuggle diesel will only earn around RM45 per trip lah. The risk may not be worth it anymore. Previously it was triple digits per trip! Just few times per day is already 4 digits.

Latest news? 30 percent drop in retail diesel sales..

Article in nst.com.my 30pc drop in retail diesel sales post-subsidy rationalisation. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said an oil company had informed the authorities that diesel sales at border petrol stations dropped by 40 per cent. Amir Hamzah said the country’s diesel subsidy expenditure had increased tenfold, from RM1.4 billion in 2019 to RM14.3 billion in 2023, where it is no longer sustainable for the government in the long term. I am looking forward to the next one; petrol price subsidy rationalisation

Yes, I know that it will cause the price I have to pay every time I pump to go up suddenly but when I look at the diesel situation, my personal opinion is that the situation could be worse for petrol yeah. Just look at all the “clever” ways people are pumping the petrol into their car. “shake shake… or jack jack up up…” So, I will support petrol subsidy rationalisation so as to “kill off” anyone trying to steal our subsidy.

If there are threats that they would stop driving their cars into Malaysia because of this increase, we should also inform them that it’s freedom of choice for everyone. Anyway, car ownership in Singapore is regulated. That’s they the certificate of entitlement (COE) is super high. The ones who refused to pay the COE will just have to continue using the MRT lah. Nothing wrong since they say MRTs can go anywhere in Singapore.

All the best to this decision. Long term wise, this is definitely an adjustment we will have to accept and things would just normalise after a while.
